How can professional mentoring succeed during practical phases of the teaching degree? What is important? In this design-based research project a four part research cycle is used to approximate the field of practical phases and counseling sessions during teacher traineeships. The goal being to show ways of communication, patterns of interaction and to point out issues in order to find opportunities for intervention. A focus is on expectations, concerns and fears of students and trainee teachers. The results show that and how counseling can be improved when faced with complex challenges, demands and expectations. They simultaneously indicate potential effects on or interactions with the current teacher shortage.
