This article provides an overview of the areas of overlap and thus opportunities for cooperation between German L1 education and religious education with regard to the development of pupils’ language skills. Starting with a brief look at the differentiation of religious education and teaching German language and literature into different subject areas, the key competence areas identified in the current competence model for German L1 education by the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs are examined to determine the extent to which language skills that are also relevant for religious education are covered and what ideas can be drawn from German didactics for religious education.
