The lack of students training to be RE teachers is set to become a nationwide problem in Germany by 2035. In view of this, the article describes options for improving theological education with small and very small groups of learners. Three promising measures are: a closer attunement to the students' diverse learning interests and needs, incorporating contextual, non-academic resources, and strengthening ecumenical, intercultural, and interreligious elements in RE teacher education. Such efforts are an opportunity to involve students and other stakeholders in designing study programs and classes that are experienced as personally relevant, professionally valuable, and academically rigorous, or in short: as truly educational.
